We have a Travis Snider sighting…

Welcome to our Fantasy Baseball Daily Notes! Just like last year, I’ll be combing over box scores and scouring local beat writers’ reports each morning to help ensure  you have all the information you need in order to make the right decisions for your fantasy baseball lineup. So make sure you check back at this very spot for Hot/Cold Streaks, Injury News, Closer Updates, Daily Stats, and more so that you can stay one step ahead of the rest of your league!

5 Good Nights, 5 Bad Nights

It’s a fact of life that every baseball player goes through hot and cold streaks. It’s important not to let those streaks influence a player’s fantasy baseball value too much, but it is important to be aware of how a player is doing within a short period of time (a seven-day sorter is always a good tool to use). A player’s short-term numbers can be the difference between winning and losing in daily games, and it can also make a huge difference in year-long leagues. For instance, if you can keep finding the second basemen on hot streaks and dropping them for another streaking second basemen once they get cold, you can piece together a very useful middle infielder-by-committee for your roto team. So before we get to today’s games, let’s take a spin through last night’s box scores to identify who had a good night and who had a bad night on Thursday, May 16th.

5 Good Nights

  • Travis Snider: 3-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, 1 steal
  • Daniel Murphy: 4-4, 2 R, RBI
  • Leonys Martin: 2-4, R, 2 steals
  • Stephen Straburg: 8.0 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 4 Ks, W
  • Mat Latos: 8.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 4 Ks

Honorable Mention: Brett Gardner, Jay Bruce, Geovany Soto, Mitch Moreland, Wilin Rosario, Will Middlebrooks, Brandon Crawford, Jose Fernandez, Jonathon Niese, Alex Cobb, Francisco Liriano

5 Bad Nights

  • Fernando Rodney: 0.2 IP, H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 Ks
  • Justin Verlander: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 Ks
  • Steve Cishek: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3  ER, 2 BB
  • Jacoby Ellsbury: 0-5
  • Todd Frazier: 0-5

Dishonorable Mention: Jayson Nix, Michael Saunders, Ike Davis, Edinson Volquez, Jhoulys Chacin, Matt Cain

Daily Grab Bag

Check back here for daily updates on injuries, closer battles, player news, and anything else that might affect your fantasy baseball team.

  • Alexi Ogando has been placed on the 15-day DL with biceps tendinitis.
  • Andrew Bailey (bicep) is expected to return to the Red Sox and assume closing duties on Monday.
  • Josh Beckett has been placed on the 15-day DL with a groin injury.
  • Matt Garza (arm) has looked strong in his rehab outings and may join the Cubs as soon as next week.

3 Up, 3 Down, and Throwing Darts

Starting and sitting the right pitchers on a day-to-day basis is often the lynchpin of winning any fantasy baseball league – roto, head-to-head, daily, and otherwise. In order to give you some help picking your pitchers for today, I’ve gone through all of the stats that I could (pitchers’ career numbers vs. certain hitters and lineups, home/road splits, lefty/righty splits, etc) and have made nine recommendations. I’m not going to proclaim that I’ll get these 100% correct all season, but anyone that does should be sitting on an island that they own in the Pacific – not writing fantasy baseball articles. The goal here is to play the odds the entire season and slowly build your “win” percentage closer to 100% than to 50%.

Here are today’s recommendations with, 3 Up (three pitchers you shouldn’t think of sitting), 3 Down (three pitchers with some warning flags for today), and Throwing Darts (three pitchers that I’ll be taking a flier on):

3 Up

Matt Harvey at Chicago Cubs

Gio Gonzalez at San Diego Padres

Clay Buchholz at Minnesota Twins

3 Down

Tony Cingrani at Philadelphia Phillies

Rick Porcello at Texas Rangers

Mark Buehrle at New York Yankees

Throwing Darts

Jarrod Parker vs. Kansas City Royals

Jorge De La Rosa vs. San Francisco Giants

Jeanmar Gomez vs. Houston Astros

Swings and Misses

A hitter’s career numbers against a pitcher don’t always tell the whole story, but it can be informative if used correctly. I’m of the opinion that some information is better than none, and while there are other pieces to the puzzle of setting your daily lineup (splits, weather, etc.), I think a hitter’s career numbers against a pitcher can be very indicative of future success or failure. Some guys just own certain pitchers, and vice versa. As such, I’ve gone through today’s matchups and picked the best (and worst) matchups I could find. Anything less than 10-12 career at-bats is a relatively small sample-size (so take those with a grain of salt), but sometimes that’s all that is available.

Swings

  • Vernon Wells is 24-for-50 (.480) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Mark Buehrle.
  • Robinson Cano is 8-for-20 (.400) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Mark Buehrle.
  • Carlos Gonzalez is 9-for-25 (.360) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Madison Bumgarner.
  • Joey Votto is 7-for-16 (.438) with one home run in his career against today’s starter, Cliff Lee.
  • J.P. Arencibia is 7-for-15 (.467) with one home run in his career against today’s starter, Hiroki Kuroda.
  • Adam Jones is 10-for-31 (.323) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Jeremy Hellickson.
  • Chris Davis is 8-for-18 (.444) with one home run in his career against today’s starter, Jeremy Hellickson.
  • Justin Morneau is 8-for-16 (.500) in his career against today’s starter, Clay Buchholz.

Misses
  • Josh Hamilton is 1-for-8 in his career against today’s starter, Chris Sale.
  • Daniel Murphy is 1-for-9 (.111) in his career against today’s starter, Edwin Jackson.
  • Coco Crisp is 3-for-17 (.176) in his career against today’s starter, James Shields.

  • Mitch Moreland: 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI
  • Howard Kendrick: 3-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, 1 steal

  • With Brandon League recently getting Don Mattingly’s shaky “he’s our closer for now” support, Kenley Jansen picked up the one-out save for the Dodgers last night. There could be changes afoot in Los Angeles and it might be smart to try and deal League for whatever you can.
  • Curtis Granderson was activated from the disabled list and went 0-3 with one run scored in his return last night.
  • Zack Greinke (collarbone) has been activated from the disabled list and will start against the Washington Nationals tonight.
  • Andrew Bailey (biceps) should rejoin the Red Sox within the next week. Make sure he’s not available on your waiver wire.
  • Coco Crisp (hamstring) has been activated from the disabled list and leadoff against the Rangers tonight.
  • Ryan Madson is expected to be activated from the disabled list later this week, and while we don’t know if he’ll replace Ernesto Frieri as the Angels’ closer or not, it might not be the worst idea to see if Madson is available in your league.
  • Jose Altuve has been placed on the bereavement list and will miss at least the next three games following the death of his grandmother. Altuve said that the jaw injury he suffered in Monday’s game wouldn’t have kept him out of the lineup otherwise, so it sounds like he shouldn’t miss more than a few games here.

  • Austin Jackson was placed on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury and prospect Avisail Garcia has been called up to replace Jackson in the lineup.
  • Jose Altuve left last night’s Astros game after suffered a sublexed jaw in a collision with Jimmy Paredes. There is no timetable for Altuve’s injury, but Altuve thinks he’ll be able to play today so it looks like disaster may have been averted here.
  • It’s not official yet, but it looks like Wei-Yin Chen will be headed to the disabled list with a strained oblique.
  • It’s looking very likely that Curtis Granderson (forearm) will make his season debut tonight when the Yankees take on Seattle.
  • Chris Perez was unavailable to pitch on Sunday because of soreness in his right shoulder. It doesn’t look like he’ll miss time, but it might be smart to grab Joe Smith (Vinnie Pestano is on the DL) if you’re absolutely desperate for saves.

  • There were reports that Wil Myers was being called up after leaving the Durham Bulls game after the second inning last night, but it turns out Myers was removed with a stomach issue. FALSE ALARM!
  • Jayson Werth has missed eight of the Nationals last nine games with what was reported as a stomach bug, but Werth underwent an MRI on his hamstring yesterday so there may be something amiss here. There are reports that he may play on Saturday, but be prepared for a possible DL trip for Werth.
  • After missing Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury, Carl Crawford may miss a few more games as the Dodgers allow him to heal. Don Mattingly is hoping he’ll be in the lineup tonight, but be prepared to be without Crawford for a few days.

  • J.J. Putz will reportedly avoid surgery and hope rest helps clear up the issues he’s having with his elbow (sprained ligament, irritated nerve). Heath Bell (who picked up the save for the Diamondbacks last night) will fill in as closer in Putz’ absence.
  • A.J. Pierzynski has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained oblique. These injuries can linger, but for now, it sounds like he won’t miss more than two weeks.
  • James McDonald has been placed on the 15-day DL with discomfort in his right shoulder and will be replaced by Jeanmar Gomez in the rotation.
  • Mark Reynolds has now played five games at third and is five games from qualifying for third base eligibility in ESPN leagues.

3 Up

Doug Fister at Washington Nationals

Cole Hamels at Arizona Diamondbacks

David Price vs. Toronto Blue Jays

3 Down

Ryan Vogelsong vs. Atlanta Braves

R.A. Dickey at Tampa Bay Rays

Bartolo Colon at Cleveland Indians

Throwing Darts

Jeremy Guthrie at Baltimore Orioles

Jason Vargas at Houston Astros

Dillon Gee vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Swings

  • Jose Bautista is 11-for-31 (.355) with four home runs in his career against today’s starter, David Price.
  • Cody Ross is 11-for-37 (.297) with five home runs in his career against today’s starter, Cole Hamels.
  • Nick Swisher is 5-for-10 (.500) with one home run in his career against today’s starter, Bartolo Colon.
  • Joe Mauer is 10-for-23 (.435) with two home runs in his career against today’s starter, John Lackey.

Misses
  • J.P. Arencibia is 1-for-13 (.077) in his career against today’s starter, David Price.
  • Chris Davis is hitless in 10 career at-bats against today’s starter, Jeremy Guthrie.
  • Miguel Cabrera is 3-for-16 (.188) in his career against today’s starter, Dan Haren.
  • Michael Cuddyer is 11-for-55 (.200) in his career against today’s starter, C.C. Sabathia.

Fantasy Baseball: Daily Notes for Wednesday, May 8th

So before we get to today’s games, let’s take a spin through last night’s box scores to identify who had a good night and who had a bad night on Tuesday, May 7th.

5 Good Nights

  • Shin-Soo Choo: 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI
  • Jose Altuve: 2-3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 1 steal
  • Andrew McCutchen: 4-4, 2 R,  RBI, 1 steal
  • Matt  Harvey: 9.0 IP, H, 0 ER, 12 Ks
  • Zach McAllister: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, BB, 4 K’s, W

Honorable Mention: Robbie Grossman, Ichiro Suzuki, Will Venable, Matt Wieters, Mark Trumbo, Paul Goldschmidt, Chris Carter, Chase Utley, Alex Gordon, Hector Santiago, Ryan Dempster, Kyle Kendrick, Hiroki Kuroda, Lance Lynn, Kris Medlen, Scott Diamond, Tommy Milone, Travis Wood, Eric Stults, C.J. • Craig Kimbrel: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 K
  • Homer BAiley: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 Ks

  • With Joel Hanrahan (forearm) and Andrew Bailey (biceps) both on the disabled list, Junichi Tazawa will assume the closer role for the Red Sox for the time being.
  • J.J. Putz left last night’s game with “elbow stiffness” and will be examined to determine the extent of his injury. Heath Bell will fill-in as closer in Putz’ absence, but David Hernandez and Matt Reynolds could figure into the equation as well.
  • Josh Reddick was placed on the 15-day DL with a wrist injury he suffered after colliding with the wall while chasing a foul ball last month.
  • Adam Eaton (elbow) has been struggling in a rehab stint at Triple-A Reno, but is still expected to join the Diamondbacks at the end of May.
  • Mark Ellis has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right quadriceps.

  • A day after Andrew Bailey was placed on the disabled list, Joel Hanrahan left the Red Sox game last night with tightness in his forearm. There is a very good chance that Hanrahan will join Bailey on the DL and Koji Uehara (and perhaps Junichi Tazawa) look to get the save opportunities in the meantime.
  • Roy Halladay has officially been placed on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.  He’ll visit Dr. Lewis Yocum today to find out more, but this may not end well.
  • Gavin Floyd will undergo season-ending surgery today and will likely miss at least a year.
  • Johnny Cueto (lat) threw another bullpen session yesterday and is could begin a rehab assignment shortly. The Reds have said he may only need one rehab start, so fantasy owners may have the Reds’ ace back in their lineups sooner rather than later.
  • Mark Teixeira (wrist) has been hitting off a tee and is now targeting an early June return to the Yankees.
  • Dayan Viciedo (oblique) began a rehab assignment and could be activated later this week.

  • Roy Halladay is experienced shoulder discomfort and is headed to Los Angeles for tests. Hallady will likely be placed on the 15-day DL, but this situation has the potential to last a lot longer than 15 days.
  • In case you missed it over the weekend, Hanley Ramirez returned to the disabled list with a hamstring injury and Dee Gordon was recalled to join the Dodgers’ roster. If he can get on base regularly (a big if), Gordon will be a good source of steals for fantasy owners.
  • Matt Garza will make his second rehab start for Triple-A Iowa today and looks to be on pace to return to the Cubs within the next two week.
  • There is no set timetable, but it’s looking like Curtis Granderson (forearm) will return to the Yankees lineup with in the next two weeks.
  • Jake Peavy will miss his second-straight start today as he continues to battle through back spasms. A DL stint hasn’t been ruled out, but the White Sox are hoping he’ll only miss one more start.

  • Andrew Bailey is experiencing “biceps discomfort” and was held out of Thursday’s save situation against Toronto. Joel Hanrahan picked up the save for the Red Sox and is worth a pickup if he’s on your waiver-wire just in case Bailey ends up having to hit the DL.
  • Ryan Zimmerman (ankle) will be activated from the disabled list today and should be in the starting lineup as the Nationals take on the Pirates.
  • Mark Ellis is expected to be placed on the 15-day DL today with a quad injury.
  • Trevor Bauer was sent back to Triple-A Columbus after being called up for a spot start on Wednesday.
  • After throwing 42 pitchers for Double-A Tennesssee on Wednesday, there is a chance that Matt Garza will return to the Cubs within two weeks.

3 Up

Clayton Kershaw at San Francisco Giants

Doug Fister at Houston Astros

Felix Hernandez at Toronto Blue Jays

3 Down

Shaun Marcum at Atlanta Braves

Barry Zito vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

A.J. Griffin at New York Yankees

Throwing Darts

Carlos Villanueva vs.  Cincinnati Reds

Jeremy Guthrie vs. Chicago White Sox

Ricky Romero vs. Seattle Mariners

Swings

  • Carlos Beltran is 23-for-42 (.548) with four home runs in his career against today’s starter, Kyle Lohse.
  • Matt Kemp is 24-for-55 (.436) with three home runs in his career against today’s starter, Barry Zito.
  • Matt Holliday is 6-for-12 (.500) with one home run in his career against today’s starter, Kyle Lohse.

Misses
  • Hunter Pence is 1-for-26 (.038) in his career against today’s starter, Clayton Kershaw.
  • Dustin Pedroia is 2-for-14 (.143) in his career against today’s starter, Derek Holland.
  • Adam Dunn is 2-for-19 (.105) in his career against today’s starter, Jeremy Guthrie.

Fantasy Baseball: Daily Notes for Wednesday, May 1st

For the second-straight day atop the list...Mr. Ryan Raburn!

For the second-straight day atop the list…Mr. Ryan Raburn!

So before we get to today’s games, let’s take a spin through last night’s box scores to identify who had a good night and who had a bad night on Tuesday, April 30th.

Daily Grab Bag

Check back here for daily updates on injuries, closer battles, player news, and anything else that might affect your fantasy baseball team.

  • Giancarlo Stanton was diagnosed with a grade-two hamstring strain (on a scale of one-to-three) and will likely miss at least three weeks.
  • After feeling tightness in his arm during Monday’s start, Stephen Strasburg was deemed healthy by the team doctor and is currently scheduled to make his next start on Saturday.
  • J.J. Putz blew his fourth save of the season last night (he has five saves) and while the Diamondbacks appear to be sticking with the veteran, it may not be a bad idea to grab David Hernandez and even Matt Reynolds.
  • Joel Hanrahan was activated from the 15-day DL, but the Red Sox announced that Andrew Bailey will continue to close going forward. Looks like Hanrahan got Wally Pipp’d here.
  • Erick Aybar was activated from the disabled list by the Angels yesterday and in a corresponding move, Peter Bourjos was placed on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury.
  • As expected, Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day DL by the Yankees to help recuperate his lingering back injury.
  • Delmon Young was activated from the DL by the Phillies yesterday and hit a home run in his first game back. He will serve as the Phillies’ regular right fielder going forward.
  • Ryan Zimmerman is expected to be activated from the DL on Friday after undergoing a quick rehab stint.
  • With Brett Myers likely out for a month with a small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, Trevor Bauer will join the Indians’ rotation and will start against the Phillies today.
