Fantasy Basketball: Welcome to Funlandia

Despite the McKayla Maroney looks on their faces, Fred and Carrie think the Trailblazers are a lot of fun!

Forgive me in advance if a hunch I had leads me to dig up some stats and bore you with something a little self-indulgent. This probably won’t impact anyone’s fantasy basketball team, but it will allow me to be able to say “I knew it” and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

Here goes…brace yourself.

The Portland Trailblazers are the most fun team in fantasy basketball.

No kidding, we already knew that. Lillard is so awesome, Batum is living up to the hype, Aldridge is a beast, JJ is smashing double doubles like a fat kid smashes a Snickers, and then there’s the other guy (no, not Jose Carreras) Wes Matthews who just ticks along. There’s nobody backing them up, so all the minutes are spread amongst the five and that’s fantasy basketball gold. Yes, I know you already know that, but wait there’s more.

I own all of them (except Jose Carreras) in various leagues and have been loving their output all season long, but I’ve felt like I’m getting even more than just stats from them. It’s felt like almost every game was going to OT or down to the wire and I was maybe getting even more than fantasy basketball production out of them. I’m getting entertainment out of them!

To that point, I’ve created a new (and potentially useless and meaningless) stat: Fun Factor. What is Fun Factor? Very simply – what percentage of a team’s games played have gone to overtime, or have been decided in regulation by five points or less. Guess who tops the list…you guessed it! Portland. 43% of the Trailblazers games have gone to OT or have been close, so the fun factor increases.

So which team is not as much fun? The Clippers. Ridiculous, isn’t it? Lob City is great to watch and they have great highlights, but their games are not always close. They almost always smash teams and win comfortably. They’re also deep, and the stars seem to get rested, so I guess from a Fantasy Fun point of view, they’re not as much fun from that point either.

Here are some other observations:

  • The Spurs were right up the top as well – Tim Duncan & Tony Parker are playing more minutes.
  • Orlando – I don’t care that they are down the list. There’s fantasy goodness there. They’re not “sexy”, but the numbers are there to help your fantasy basketball team.
  • Sacramento – I wonder how much closer their games would have been if Isaiah was the main guy all year.

What does all this mean? What am I getting at? It really means nothing in terms of fantasy basketball, but I had a theory about Portland’s fun factor and was curious to see if I was right.

That said, if you feel like your fantasy basketball season is slipping away and you’re losing interest, there’s always the opportunity to add some more fun. Shake up your roster and go get some Trailblazers. After all, fantasy basketball is meant to be fun.

If you want to see what other teams can provide some Fun Factor to your fantasy basketball roster, I’ve created the following list:
